🎬 Season 1, Episode 4 - “Assignments from Above"

"Assignments from Above"

Sunday morning light spilled through the stained-glass windows of Glory Tabernacle Ministries, casting soft colors on the congregation. Obiora and Chukwuamaka, now a familiar couple among the pews, walked in hand-in-hand, their presence drawing nods and warm smiles from fellow members.

Since their return, they had become regulars, always early, always engaged. It felt good to be part of something bigger. Something spiritual. Or so it seemed.

After the service, Reverend Kukpeje made an announcement.

“The Spirit of the Lord is moving... and He has placed it in my heart to elevate some of our members into greater purpose,” he said, his eyes scanning the room before falling, deliberately on the couple. “Brother Obiora and Sister Chukwuamaka, please stand.”

A quiet ripple moved through the congregation as they rose to their feet.

“Brother Obiora, we have prayed and the Lord has spoken. You are appointed as the church treasurer. A position of trust and accountability.”

Obiora nodded, surprised, but honored.

“And Sister Chukwuamaka,” the Reverend continued, a subtle softness slipping into his tone, “your voice has not gone unnoticed in worship. The music ministry is calling you.”

Chukwuamaka looked at Obiora, who smiled and nodded his approval. She turned back and accepted. “Thank you, sir.”

The congregation clapped, and the moment passed like any other. But beneath the applause, the Reverend’s eyes lingered just a second too long on Chukwuamaka.

That week, things moved quickly. Obiora began attending meetings with the finance committee, reviewing spreadsheets and church accounts. It was time-consuming but fulfilling.

Chukwuamaka, on the other hand, spent late evenings at church rehearsals, where Rev. Kukpeje was always somehow present either observing, advising, or praying over the choir.

After one session, as the others left, she found herself alone with him.

“You have a gift,” he said softly, stepping closer than necessary. “Not just to sing... but to carry presence. Few people do.”

Chukwuamaka shifted uncomfortably. “Thank you, sir.”

“You know,” he continued, “there’s a light around you. I sensed it from the moment I saw you. You are... different.”

She offered a polite smile, trying to ignore the chill that crawled down her spine. “I should get going. Obiora’s waiting.”

His expression didn’t falter, but there was something unreadable in his eyes. “Of course. Tell him I said God bless.”

She left quickly.

At home, she didn’t mention the moment, not because she didn’t want to, but because she didn’t quite know what it meant. And because she didn't want to be accused of overthinking things.

Obiora was exhausted, knee-deep in financial audits. They kissed each other goodnight, but something unspoken lingered in the room.

Later that night, as Obiora lay awake, he turned to look at his wife sleeping peacefully beside him.

He didn’t know why, but he suddenly felt like someone else was watching over her too... and not in the way a pastor should.
