🎬 Season 1, Episode 7 - “Echoes of the Village"

"Echoes of the Village"

The dawn of sun filtered through the abode of the couples . Chukwuamaka was in the kitchen, humming a soft tune, while Obiora sat in the living room, staring blankly at his phone while catching up with the early morning news on TV.

He had already missed three calls from the same number. This time, he knew it was his mother.
"Mama what again, what again!" he said and dropped the call.

He sighed, rubbed his face, and walked out to the balcony, letting the morning breeze hit him.

Obiora started to reflect back at home in the village. The dusty red roads of Umuakashi village stretched ahead as a young Obiora, with his books tucked under his arm, walked home from school. Life was simple then. And at the center of that simplicity was Sade, his childhood love.

She had been his best friend since they were kids, and now she had become his world. They would walk hand in hand under mango trees, sit by the river bank, and dream of the future , their future together.

Obiora’s mother adored Sade. She was of their tribe, respectful, soft-spoken, and every inch the wife she had prayed for her son. So, when Obiora completed his schooling and made plans to head to the city, he promised Sade they would marry soon.

He even bought her wrappers, cooking pots, and beaded jewelry and everything needed for the traditional marriage.

But Lagos changed him.

The ringing phone snapped him back from his daydreaming.

He answered.

(on phone)
MAMA:“Obiora… I’ve done my findings. That girl you married, she’s not from us. She’s from that tribe I warned you about! And the things I’ve heard… ah, my son, open your eyes o!”

OBIORA:
“Mama, please, not today. I'm tired.”

MAMA:
“I will not keep quiet and watch you drown. You left Sade, that girl who would die for you. Now see how this one is being looked at by your pastor!”

OBIORA:
"Mama, who has been fetching you with these information, and how did you know about our pastor. Obiora angrily ended the call.

His hands trembled slightly.

FLASHBACK CONTINUES;
In the city, Obiora had met Chukwuamaka at a tech seminar. She was lively, intelligent and , confident, the opposite of Sade’s calm village girl demeanor. Something about her freshness, her energy, pulled him in.

One month later, they were inseparable.

Two months later, he stopped replying to Sade’s letters.

Then one day, he sent word through a friend.

“It’s over.”

Sade wept. She had already told her family the wedding was near.

Obiora had moved on. Quickly. Too quickly.

Now, Chukwuamaka came to the balcony, holding two mugs of tea. “You’ve been quiet my love,” she said.

Obiora forced a smile. “Just thinking.” He replied.

As she placed a mug beside him and turned away, he looked at her… and for a second, he saw Sade’s face instead.

Guilt wrapped around his chest like a vice.

He didn’t know what was coming…
But the past was catching up, and the present was shifting beneath him so quickly.

To be continued...
