"The Room No One Lives In"
That night, I couldn’t sleep.
There was no nightmare this time, just a deep, unsettling feeling crawling through my skin like something was watching me. My heart beat heavy in the silence. The ticking clock sounded like a war drum.
I picked up my phone and dialed Axel.
“Can you come get me? I don’t want to be alone tonight.”
He didn’t hesitate. Within 20 minutes, his car pulled up outside my gate. The sight of him brought relief, and I slid into the passenger seat like a child running to safety. We didn’t talk much on the drive, just the smooth hum of the road and his reassuring hand over mine.
His house was dark and quiet, like always.
He wrapped his arms around me and led me inside, holding me tight. We laid down with some Kenny G saxophone softly filling the room, warm, gentle, seductive. It felt like a movie scene. I nuzzled into his chest, the tension from earlier slowly melting into comfort.
Around 2 a.m., we became intimate again. It felt deeper this time, like something spiritual, something ritualistic. He moved with purpose, and I gave in to the rhythm.
Afterwards, he gently cleaned me up.
But… with a red cloth.
That caught my attention.
“Why red?” I whispered. He didn’t answer.
He folded it carefully, almost ceremonially, and said,
“I’ll be right back, okay?”
He walked off, but not toward the bedroom.
He headed to that room…
the one he said no one lived in.
I sat up, curious and uneasy.
Minutes passed.
Then more minutes.
He still wasn’t back.
The house was dead silent… until I heard muffled voices coming from that room. My breath caught in my throat. It wasn’t just Axel. There were others. Whispering… murmuring.
Then the whispering turned to chants.
Strange, deep-toned incantations in a language I couldn’t recognize.
They grew louder… rhythmic… commanding.
My heart pounded. I tiptoed toward the hallway, the sound pulling me like gravity. As I got closer to the door, I noticed a faint glow under it, flickering, like candlelight or fire.
My fingers trembled as I reached for the knob.
A voice inside, Axel’s voice, rose above the others:
“She is ready…”
Ready for what?
I froze.
The urge to run clashed with the fear of making a sound.
I couldn’t move. Couldn’t breathe.
And then
The room fell dead silent.
As if they knew I was there.
I quickly tiptoed back to the room, heart pounding, hands shaking, eyes wide. I lay under the covers pretending to be asleep when Axel returned minutes later, smiling softly… as if nothing had happened.
“You’re still awake?” he asked, stroking my hair.
I nodded, unsure whether to scream or melt into his arms again.
That night, I didn’t close my eyes.
And I kept asking myself…
What was behind that door?
And what did he mean by “she is ready”?
To be continued…
