“The Warning”


The phone was still pressed to Obiora’s ear.
He was frozen in place, shoes on, briefcase in hand, halfway to the door when the words dropped like a heavy stone into his heart.

MAMA OBIORA (on phone): “My son… you married a woman you don’t know.”

Obiora’s breath caught.

“That girl… Chukwuamaka… has another face you never waited to see.”

Before you guys met, she dresses in vibrant colors, and smiled seductively especially at strangers,
“She even has a child, Obiora. And she never told you all this.”

Obiora sat down slowly, heart racing.

“She used to like a certain kind of men, as i was told; tall, dark, smooth-talking. Exactly how that Reverend you always talk about looks.”

His blood ran cold.


“And listen carefully… In her tribe’s custom… if a married woman cheats on her husband, the husband rather dies. My son I am not ready to loose you, so be wise”.

Obiora blinked rapidly, his fingers trembling.

“And if the man she sleeps with comes near the husband... the sickness worsens.”

“I am warning you, my son. Be careful. You threw Sade away for this woman, and now your own life is on the line.”

Obiora tried to speak, but his throat was dry. His world spun.

“I already have an informant watching her. She’s not who you think”

Suddenly, a scream.

MAMA OBIORA (panicked): “My chest! My chest!”

The line went dead.

Mama Obiora dropped the phone.

His heart pounded in his chest. The silence in the room was louder than thunder.

“Mama? Mama…?”

No answer.

He paced, then stopped. The weight of everything she just said pressing down on him.

The door creaked. Chukuemeka appeared from the hallway, adjusting her wrapper.

CHUKWUAMEKA (smiling faintly): “You’re not off to work again?”

He stared at her, no words. Just… stared.

She stepped closer.

“Obiora… what’s wrong?”

Obiora took a step back.


Rev. Kukpeje stared at the notification pop up on his phone from a strange number. It reads in capital letters: "BE CAREFUL. THE TRUTH IS CATCHING UP WITH YOU."

He smiled darkly and swiped it off..

"The Room No One Lives In" That night, I couldn’t sleep. There was no nightmare this time, just a deep, unsettling feeling crawling through my skin like something was watching me. My heart beat heavy in the silence. The ticking clock sounded like a war drum. I picked up my phone and dialed Axel. “Can you come get me? I don’t want to be alone tonight.” He didn’t hesitate. Aunty Amina, seated in a dimly lit corner of the living room, held a thick bundle of dried ancestral leaves close to her heart. Something in her spirit whispered a warning. Her instincts, forged through years of spiritual attunement, told her she had become the target of a dark ritual. Without hesitation, she lit a small fire in the backyard and began a powerful counter-incantation, drawing ancient protective symbols into the air as she chanted: “Ase edumare, arugbo ojo! Fi ina re run ota mi. To ba se iku won rò fun mi, ki iku bo won ni afẹfẹ.” (Oh Ancient of Days! Let Your fire consume my enemies. If they plotted death for me, may death chase them in the wind.)
