"Tears Beneath the Flesh"

The night was heavy, almost suffocating, as Obiora lay still on the cold hospital bed, his body burning with fever but his lips unable to form words. His eyes, however, spoke volumes brimming with tears, staring blankly at the ceiling as if he could see beyond it. Chukwuamaka sat beside him, her face contorted in worry… and guilt. Her heart raced not just out of fear for Obiora, but because of the secret that wrapped around her like a noose.

In her panic, she dialed Rev. Kukpeje.

“Obiora don collapse o, we dey hospital now… e no dey talk, just dey look me like say e dey talk for im mind,” she said, her voice trembling.

The Rev. on the other end paused for a second. “I’ll be right there,” he responded with a certain calm that concealed the storm brewing within him. The truth of his involvement with Chukwuamaka was now a threat, a fire that could burn everything down if not contained.

Not long after, he walked into the hospital ward his white collar crisply pressed, his Bible in one hand, and oil in the other. He laid his hands on Obiora’s forehead and prayed with passion.

But unknown to him, his very presence was the poison that was quickening Obiora’s death. The ancestral curse, sealed by Chukwuamaka's betrayal and magnified by the pastor's visits, was already in motion.

Aunty Amina had stormed into the compound of the family head in the dead of night. The family gathered quickly, knowing this wasn’t an ordinary summon.

“He’s dying,” she said. “That boy is dying, and the spirits are not keeping silent.”

She narrated everything how Obiora had married against his mother’s wishes, the strange sickness, the spiritualist’s warning, and Chukwuamaka’s tribal background.

“The priest said, ‘The husband of the broken vow is crying, not with voice but with spirit. The fire visits his dwelling every time the betrayal deepens,’” Amina recited.

A hushed silence fell upon the compound. The family head, an elder with deep spiritual wisdom, closed his eyes and inhaled deeply.

“This is not just fever. His spirit is sinking under spiritual betrayal. The woman and the man she lies with bring his death nearer with every touch, every secret smile, every visit.”

At the hospital, Chukwuamaka sat outside the ward. She held her phone tightly, afraid it would ring again. She had just finished talking to Ada, who was threatening to expose everything if she didn’t handle things properly.

Inside the ward, Obiora stirred. For the first time in hours, he blinked, his lips moved. The nurse rushed to call Chukwuamaka. She hurried in, Rev. Kukpeje beside her. But Obiora’s eyes, now full of clarity, locked with hers.

“I... know...” he whispered before coughing violently.

That single phrase tore through her like thunder.

“Know what?” the Rev. asked, trying to mask his panic.

But Obiora didn’t answer. He had slipped back into unconsciousness.
