🎬 Season 1, Episode 2 - “The Welcome"

"The Welcome"

The week had been full of soft smiles and routine gestures, but a subtle change had taken hold in Obiora. He laughed at Chukwuamaka’s jokes, held her in bed at night, and helped plan the bookstore’s early blueprint, but behind his eyes was a quiet, unshakable shadow. Still, he carried it with grace, shielding her from worry.

It was a quiet Sunday morning when Chukwuamaka brought it up.

“Obi... I was thinking, it’s been a long while since we went to church together. Maybe it’s time we go back. You know... realign.”

Obiora paused in buttoning his shirt, his eyes meeting hers in the mirror. For a beat, silence filled the room. Then he nodded slowly.

“You're right. Let’s go.”

They stepped into Glory Tabernacle Ministries, an unassuming white building tucked between shops on the edge of Surulere. Inside, it was different still, reverent, with a charged kind of peace that clung to the air like incense.

At the pulpit stood Reverend Kukpeje, a man in his early 50s with greying temples, piercing eyes, and a calm authority that needed no microphone. He was known across Lagos for his uncanny spiritual sensitivity people whispered about how he once called out a man mid-sermon who had been hiding a crime for years. Yet his power was balanced with gentleness, the way a surgeon handles a blade.

As the service began, the couple found their seats in the second row. Worship rose like incense hands lifted, voices deep in surrender. Chukwuamaka closed her eyes, caught in the moment.

Obiora tried to do the same, but his heart felt heavy. Anxious thoughts tugged at him the mysterious phone call, the truth he hadn’t spoken, the weight that grew heavier by the day. He squeezed his eyes shut.

Just then, the music faded, and Reverend Kukpeje stepped forward with a stillness that hushed the room.

“I don’t usually do this,” he said slowly, eyes scanning the crowd. “But the Spirit of God just arrested me. There’s a young couple here newly married. You came today with good intentions, but one of you carries a burden too heavy to bear alone.”

Obiora’s breath caught.

The pastor turned his gaze, eyes locking directly onto Obiora’s.

“You... yes, you, my brother. The Lord says, 'Come unto Me, all you who are weary...' There is something trying to rob you of your peace something hidden. But the Lord says, this house is a place of refuge. You are welcome here.”

The silence in the church was deafening. Chukwuamaka glanced at Obiora in surprise, but he didn’t meet her gaze. Instead, he kept his eyes on the floor, fists clenched in his lap.

After the service, as people filed out, Reverend Kukpeje made his way over to them with an unexpected warmth.

“Welcome back to the house of the Lord,” he said with a smile. “You both carry something precious, and the Lord has plans for your union. I’d like to meet with you... sometime soon, if you're willing.”

Obiora forced a smile. “We’d like that, sir. Thank you.”

But as they left the church and stepped into the Lagos heat, Chukwuamaka turned to him.

“What did he mean, Obi?”

He wrapped an arm around her. “I’m not sure. But let’s just keep going. One day at a time".
