🎬 Season 1, Episode 5 - “Whispers in the Choir"

Season 1, Episode 5: "Whispers in the Choir"

The church's choir had begun to rise in popularity. The blend of worship and vocal precision was moving hearts, and at the center of it all was Chukwuamaka , her voice tender yet powerful, effortlessly leading souls into worship.

But with every rehearsal came a familiar pattern.

The others would pack up and leave.

She would stay behind “for feedback,” as the Reverend called it.

At first, it was harmless. Suggestions about posture. Notes on vocal control. Scripture references that aligned with the songs. But then came the soft compliments. The way he reached for her hand when praying. The occasional laughter at jokes she didn’t quite understand.

One evening, as they sat side by side in the empty church, Reverend Kukpeje leaned closer than usual.

“You remind me of someone,” he said.

She turned to him. “Who?”

He smiled faintly, his gaze fixed on her. “Someone I once loved deeply. Before the ministry consumed everything.”

Chukwuamaka’s heart skipped. A line had just been crossed.

She stood, collecting her bag quickly. “I should go.”

His smile never faltered. “Of course. Greet your husband for me.”

She didn’t look back.

Back in the choir, whispers had begun.

“Sister Peace,” one of the altos, leaned toward another during a water break. “Have you noticed how pastor always stays after rehearsal with her? Every time?”

The other nodded, cautious. “Maybe it’s ministry. Maybe…”

“Maybe,” Peace said. “But God is not the author of confusion.”

Meanwhile, Obiora’s mind had shifted elsewhere. The burden from that phone call had begun haunting him in a different way. He’d received two more missed calls from the same unknown number, and this time, they left a voicemail.

He hadn’t played it yet. He couldn’t bring himself to.

Instead, he buried himself in church finances, invoices, and the thick spreadsheets that gave him structure.

When Chukwuamaka arrived home later than usual again, he asked without looking up, “Long rehearsal?”

She hesitated. “Yeah… we were just going over some new songs.”

He smiled weakly. “You’re doing great.”

She nodded, but her smile didn’t reach his eyes.

They both turned away from each other at the same time, two people in love, drifting.

Later that night, Sister Peace sat alone at home, praying softly. She opened her Bible randomly, seeking guidance, and her eyes landed on a verse:

“Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” — Matthew 7:15

The candle flickered beside her as a chill passed through the room.
